The Queensland National Bank Limited was the second bank to open in Jondowaie (now Jandowae) in the Darling Downs district of Queensland. The block was purchased in late 1913 at which time the QNB was trading from one of the rooms on the verandah of the Club Hotel which also still stands today. The building was completed by builder Tim Tovell and the branch opened for business on the 24th of April 1914. The manager’s residence which forms part of the building was completed in 1915.
In 1948 the Queensland National Bank Limited merged with the National Bank of Australasia Limited. Following another merger with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney in 1981 it became renamed the National Australia Bank and remained such until the branch’s closure in late 1996 at which time it became a private residence.

Over the next two decades the building changed ownership four times. Amazingly, none of these successive owners had done anything to renovate this building. When we first inspected it in March 2018, the old manager’s office walls were still in the foyer completely untouched, as were the teller counters, although the latter had suffered some chopping and changing. That said, we hope to put the jigsaw back together and utilise these pieces in the restoration.
